What is a chapbook? Well, as some of you may (or may not) know, a chapbook is a little booklet of poetry, usually centered around a certain theme. Usually the cap is between 24-26 pages in length, filled with a small spritz of bite-sized poems about whatever you choose. It's a great way to break into the poetry field and make a little cash (emphasis on little! Chapbooks should not cost more than $5!) Plus, it's easy to do it yourself!
What's in it for you? Making a name for yourself. Think of it like your business card, a taste-test of the greater books to come (whenever you get a minute to sit down and write that).
How do I make one? Check out some options below...
This is the slightly more expensive, though it yields more professional looking results. Utilize the online printing option to save yourself time, or upload a file of your already typed up chapbook. Keep in mind, you'll want a nicer cardstock for the cover, and if you want color ink, prepare to bust open the wallet. You won't find the exact term "chapbook" on the online selection, but just think of it as a booklet or manual. Double check with the employees inside. They're paid to help you!
DIY
This is the slightly more time consuming option, though it saves you peeling out a few crisp twenties at the local print shop. Keep in mind, you are the one printing all of this (aka you pay for ink), you are the one stapling all of this (aka don't print more than you can staple), and you are the one designing all of this (as in, we're not all artists). You might want to ask a crafty friend to take a look at it for you. But the rustic and homemade feel gives it something particularly quaint in character. Just please, please make sure to edit!
